Chemical bonding
What does chemical bonding mean?
Union of any atom, molecule or ion with another atom , molecule or ion is CHEMICAL BONDING.
Formation of ions
Ion is a charge particle .
If it is negative then it is anion.
If it is positive then it is cation.
If a ball is rolled then after some time it will stop to be stable like this even atoms want to be stable .To be stable atoms should have 8 in its outermost shell this is octet configuration.
Eg- Sodium (Na)
It has atomic number 11
Its electronic configuration is 2,8,1.
So for sodium to have octet configuration it is easy to lose 1 electron or easy to gain 7 electrons ofcource to lose 1 electron so Na loses one electron to gain stability.
Now Na has -
10 electrons
11 protons
so 1 extra proton now we write sodium as
Na+
If an atom loses electron then it is electro positive
All such atoms are metals.
Ionic or electrovalent bonding
The type of chemical bond in which sharing of electrons is known as electrovalent or ionic bonding.
E.g- 1. Formation of NaCl bond
As we have learnt that sodium atom gives one atom of and chlorine needs one atom to be stable so Na will give one electron to Cl and NaCl is formed.
Covalent bonding
The type of bonding in which sharing of electrons takes place it is known as Covalent bonding.
It has of two types-
1. Polar Covalent bond
2. Non-Polar Covalent bond
